John Conway Obituary

John W. Conway
05/17/1953 - 02/15/2026
It is with deep love and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father and Pops, John William Conway, affectionately known to many as "Slim," on Sunday, February 15, 2026. At age 72, and a lifelong resident of Waterbury, John entered into heaven surrounded by his loving children. Born on May 17, 1953, he was the son of the late Francis and Marjory Conway.
No matter what title he held; Daddy, Pops, Papa, brother, or friend, John was the kind of man whose presence, often dressed in suspenders, made an impact. On most days, you'd find him arriving on his Harley, a grin on his face and a rumble in his voice, ready for whatever adventure the day might bring. He was a proud truck owner, happiest behind the wheel or out on the open road, where freedom met determination in true Slim fashion. Strong-willed and stubborn in the best ways, he lived life on his own terms, yet always with a heart that put others first. This was visible in the home he made for his children, the sacrifices he made throughout fatherhood, and the time he gave to those he loved most.
John was a hardworking man who retired as a concrete foreman at Alpha, yet he remained humble, finding joy in the simple things. Camping and cribbage were favorite pastimes, along with collecting cans with the same dedication he gave to everything he did. John was that straightforward kind of guy, cheering for da Bears and Orioles, proving his duct tape theory, and sharing stories and laughter with his lifelong friends since kindergarten. All were evident in the man he was; steady, fun-loving, and always ready to show up.
Nothing, however, meant more to him than his family. He was a proud dad, having raised a strong and hardworking daughter, and was grateful to have experienced that once-in-a-lifetime father-son bond. They say the best dads make the greatest papas, and that was certainly true for John. His greatest achievement and legacy are his grandchildren, who will continue to look up to him, just from a little farther away. John never missed any moment with his family, whether it be their sporting event, birthday, or special milestone. Whether that meant fighting through his own ailments or perfecting his "spirit fingers," he was there to see their smiles and celebrate their successes. From the stands or his spot on the rock, Pop was always there, proud and supportive.
To honor his memory, he leaves behind his children, Melissa Kobelski and her husband, Gary, of Watertown; his son, Patrick Conway and Shelby McManamy of Bristol; and his four cherished grandchildren, Cadence, Gary Jr. ("Happy"), Harlee, and Aurora. He is also survived by his two brothers, Patrick and Francis; his adored cousin, Kathleen Zembrzuski, and the rest of the Fairlawn boys.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his beloved blood brother, Daniel Donovan, whose sudden loss he carried deeply. We take comfort in knowing they are reunited and causing some brotherly banter in heaven.
Arrangements: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, 1:30 p.m. at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Waterbury. There will be no calling hours per Slim's wishes. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the Basilica Thursday morning. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In honoring his spirit and the way he lived, the family kindly requests that attendees wear dungarees to his Mass - a simple, heartfelt tribute to the man who was most comfortable in denim, on Thursday. Chase Parkway Memorial, the Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parklway, Waterbury, has been entrusted with handling John's funeral arrangements.
