John Cornish Obituary

John Cornish entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 11, 2026 with his loving family at his side. John was born on August 30, 1952, the youngest son of Willis and Eunice Cornish in Rome, NY. He was a graduate of VVS and earned his RN from SUNY Morrisville. On November 29, 1974, in St. Mary's of the Annunciation Church in Rome, he was united in marriage to Nancy Shanley, a blessed union of 51 years.

John worked as a mental health nurse at Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center for 38 years. He was a Major in the United States Air Force reserves for 20 years doing several tours in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom. John was a Member of the VFW. To know John was to laugh, he had a sense of humor and wit that could make anyone laugh and smile. He will be sorely missed.

Surviving besides his loving wife, Nancy, are two sons, Evan (Susan) and Ryan (Chloe); a brother, Robert Cornish; three cherished grandchildren, Benjamin, Rylee, and Mason; and two nephews, Jeff (Val) and Michael (Lauren). He was preceded in death by his brother James and nephew Mitch.

John's family would like to thank all the staff of Strong Memorial Hospital and SUNY Upstate for their care and compassion as well Dr. Tallandini and Dr. Razia

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Donations can be made in memory of John to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome NY 13440.

Dear Nancy and Family,
I´m so very sorry for your great loss. I remember John first from the Greenway neighborhood when he was in his early teens, and then I worked with him at Rome Developmental Center(Rome DDSO)as an RN. He was not only a good nurse but his sense of humor was legendary. He was quite the prankster and I was the recipient of some of it . He was fun loving ,hard working and a joy to be around. He loved his family and I pray that his sweet memories comfort you during this sad time .Sending prayers and love to you all.
