John Crawford Obituary

John H. Crawford
02/15/1942 - 05/27/2025
John Henry Crawford, a gifted storyteller, celebrated "ad man", and beloved brother, uncle, and friend to many passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, at his cherished home overlooking the waters of Raccoon Straits in Tiburon, California. He was 83.
Born on February 15, 1942, in Brighton, Massachusetts, John was the younger of two children raised by hardworking Irish parents. Though their upbringing was modest, it was rich in words, storytelling, and books-a foundation that would shape John's unrivaled deep love of literature and narrative.
From an early age, John displayed a remarkable intellect and memory. A fluent reader by three and a published writer in *The Atlantic* by the age of 17, he earned a scholarship to Tufts University, setting in motion a career that would bridge his love of story and marketing. John began his career in New York and, later, went on to found his own advertising agency, John Crawford Creative, in San Francisco, where his talents left an indelible mark. His work brought to life memorable campaigns of the 1980s, which included those for Round Table Pizza, the Yellow Pages, and even the famously polarizing Crazy Crab mascot of the San Francisco Giants.
John's wit and brilliant mind made him a natural entertainer in any setting. He was able to command attention at dinner tables and many social gatherings. Though he had no children of his own, he delighted in spoiling his niece and nephews-reliably gifting the noisiest electronic toys to the boys and pretty dresses to his niece. His cherry pipe tobacco wafted over many family gatherings. It was synonymous with the joy and warmth of the holidays.
In his 40s, John found the love of his life, Norah Elliot. Their connection was instant. He said he fell in love with her at a dinner party. They spent their years building a home at the edge of the bay and traveling the world. With Norah, John found not only a partner, but a family, which included her three children and, in time, her grandchildren, who embraced John as their own.
John never lost sight of what truly mattered. He was generous and quietly supported organizations in his ancestral Ireland and a wide range of charitable causes, such as the Audubon Society and St. Anthony's Dining Room. He believed that helping others was his highest achievement. Those who knew him would agree.
John is preceded in death by his parents (Margaret and John Crawford) and his beloved Norah. He is survived by his sister (Nancy Sanftner), her children and grandchildren, Norah's children and grandchildren, cousins in Ireland, and the many people whose lives he touched with his generosity, humor, and wisdom.
A celebration was held at the Falkirk Cultural Center in San Rafael on August 3rd. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Doctors Without Borders in John's name.

John came to SF to work as a copywriter at BBDO in Jan 1970. Lived in Tiburon and commuted by Ferry to SF. Not only did I also work at BBDO but was married to Dick Austin Dec 1969, lived in Tiburon and we also commuted by Ferry. We all became great friends. John loved to cook and so we had many happy & fun meals together. Quick story on John's talent and ability to observe:
Say a "John" commercial one day that included a couple mildly but funnily bickering and something familiar was coming thru to me. Next time I talked to John I asked what is so familiar to me about that commercial. His reply, "Yeah, that's you and Dick talking to each other. He was a lot of fun. The world will miss him.
