John V. Crescenzo, 86, of Rockford, IL, passed away peacefully at home with his family after a short illness on April 14, 2025.
Born on August 16, 1938, in Rockford to Vincent and Carmela (Calliea) Crescenzo, John was a lifelong resident of the city he loved. A proud graduate of Rockford West High School, John went on to serve his country in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962, where he played clarinet in the Navy band.
His passion for music continued throughout his life; he was a talented accordionist and could often be found playing for family or with friends or performing for local events. He had a deep appreciation for classic films, a great sense of humor, and never missed the chance to share a good joke.
John's faith in God was the foundation of his life, and he found joy in sharing the Word of God with family and friends. He will be remembered for his unwavering faith, and his love for his family.
John is survived by his three children, Colleen (Paul) Mains, Vince (Amy) Crescenzo, and Chris (Darla) Crescenzo; grandchildren, Stephanie (Chantelle) Mains, Tyler ( Elizabeth) Mains, Alissa Nelson, Joseph Crescenzo, Kara (Casey) Dyer, and Tiffany Crescenzo; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife, Susan Crescenzo; parents; three sisters; two brothers; grandson, Caleb Crescenzo.
The family would like to give special thanks to his nurses at OSF Medical Center and his nurses from Northern Illinois Hospice.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Honquest Family Funeral Home – Mulford Chapel, 4311 N. Mulford rd. Loves Park, IL, 61111, at 10:00 AM, with a visitation starting at 9:00 AM until time of service. A private burial will be held at Arlington Memorial Park in Rockford, IL.

John and I were very good friends for many years. We enjoyed playing music together with our Piano Accordion. What I remember most is when John and I went on a Veterans bus trip. On the way. everyone on the bus stayed overnight at a hotel. At 6:00AM, we got back on the bus. It was very dark outside. John was looking out the window and said "What a beautiful view." Then he said "Oh, that's my reflection." I will never forget what he said. John and I enjoyed our friendship.

John was a neighbor of my Mom and Dad for many years. After we lost my Dad in 2005 he was very good to my Mom. Especially so after she moved to the Madison area. She looked for and appreciated his calls updating her about the neighborhood back home. Our heartfelt sympathies to John´s family. He was a kind man.

John was a great friend, who will be missed by many. I remember playing accordion with John and the group of eight other accordion players on Wednesdays of every other week. That was wonderful times where everyone would enjoy the friendships.
