John H. DeVitis Jr., 77, of Hickory, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021.
He was born in Canonsburg to the late John "Sparky" and Jeannette DeVitis.
Mr. DeVitis graduated from Fort Cherry School High School. He proudly served in the Vietnam War with the 630th Transportation Army Reserve Unit, Gabby Heights, Washington.
Mr. DeVitis went on to own DeVitis Construction Company for many years. He built many homes and apartments in the local area as well as completed many remodeling jobs.
He worked as a union carpenter for Local 84, retiring in 2002.
His proudest accomplishment was building, designing, and being the original owner of The Red Fox Lodge in Hickory, where, along with his family, he catered weddings, banquets, and private parties for many years.
He was an accomplished woodworker who made a lot of his own furniture for his home. He loved to cook and was well-known for his pasta dishes and sauces as well as biscotti and pizzelles. In addition, John enjoyed having Christmas parties for his friends and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. DeVitis was a member of the Italian American Society in Canonsburg and the Carpenters Union Local 84.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra; a daughter, Angela Minton (Doug); a son, John S. DeVitis (Dawn); grandchildren Anthony John and Alyssa Nicole DeVitis; a sister, Carol DeVitis of Hickory; a sister-in-law, Joanne Shergi (John) of Mt. Pleasant; and several nephews.
Deceased are a brother, James DeVitis; and a brother-in-law, Samuel Sprando.
Friends will be received from noon to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 2, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Services and interment in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any veterans organization.
