Louis DeVitis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Higgins Memorial Home - Freehold on Jul. 11, 2023.
Louis "Gigi" Ernest DeVitis lived a full 89 years of life and when he was recently given a diagnosis of acute leukemia he declared to go home and be with his family. Dad left us on Sunday, July 9, 2023 in Perrineville, NJ and is at peace.
He grew up and worked on his family's farm in Millhurst, NJ until enlisting in the United States Army serving during the Korean War.
Upon his return, he married Marie Siconolfi (predeceased in 2008) and together they created a life for their five children.
He built a rental business in Hightstown, NJ, and many homes and businesses throughout Mercer County and in his later career served as the Senior Code Official in Lawrence Township.
Louis was a lifetime member of the Elks and the American Legion in addition to being an avid supporter of the Disabled Veterans.
Over the course of his life, Lou's creative thinking awarded him three patents. He was happiest in his garden, riding his tractor, listening to music, watching westerns and MSNBC, eating at his favorite diner and telling stories to his children, grandchildren and friends. You may have seen him at the local diner recounting a story or at ShopRite providing advice on how to best prepare broccoli rabe or on one of his daily walks along Perrineville Road. He lived a humble life in the service of his family and close friends.
Louis is survived by his five devoted children- Thomas DeVitis, son (of Myrtle Beach, SC), daughter, Denise Touhey and her husband, Timothy (of Manasquan, NJ), Louis DeVitis, son (of Millstone, Twp, NJ), Kirk DeVitis, son and his wife, AnChristen (of Chesterfield Twp, NJ) and Tami DeVitis, daughter (of Washington, D.C.).
He left an immense impression on his grandchildren-the light of his life - Tommy Devitis and wife, Jaclyn Zeal (Spring City, PA), and Cole, Quinn and Maeve Touhey of Manasquan. Further, he will be missed by Rita Conte, sister (Long Branch), Eileen Beck, sister (Jackson) and Marie Abbatiello and her husband, Carmine (Manalapan) as well as those siblings -Rosemary Bordunovich (sister), Lawrence DeVitis (brother), and David DeVitis (brother) - and family members by marriage who have greeted him in heaven. There are many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends who delighted in Uncle Louie/Gigi/Lou's endless jokes and stories and who are also saddened by his passing.
Viewing hours will be held on Wednesday, July 12th from 4-8pm at Higgins Memorial Home in Freehold, NJ which will be followed the next morning at 10:00 am by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose of Lima with burial service at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Freehold, NJ. Family and friends who would like to do something in his memory are asked to consider donating to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton or Serenity Hospice which supported his medical journey or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
