Born on December 29, 1960, in New Orleans, Louisiana, John grew up immersed in the vibrant culture of the Bayou, which shaped his zest for life. John was a dedicated professional in the concrete industry, finding both fulfillment and pride in his work. He spent ten years working for Chet Morris, where his strong work ethic and commitment to excellence set him apart. Beyond his professional life, John was a beloved figure among his family and friends, known for his warmth, humor, and culinary talents. He had an incredible knack for cooking, often bringing loved ones together through shared meals and laughter.
An avid fisherman, John cherished the moments spent by the water, whether casting a line or sharing stories with friends and family he was also a collector of iron, and many called him "ironman". He was affectionately regarded by his nieces and nephews as their favorite uncle, embodying the spirit of fun and camaraderie that defined his relationships with them. John also held a special place in his heart for his godchildren and looked upon them with the love and guidance of a true mentor. He was a role model to his special kids, Jeremey, Jermaine, and Wyanisha Woodside, Taleka Nelson, Evelyn Ballard, special grandson, Mason Ingram and granddaughter, Mya Woodside-nurturing their dreams and aspirations with unwavering support. He also had a host of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. John's life was enriched by deep connections with special friends, particularly Juanita Martin, who stood by him through thick and thin. He also nurtured bonds with Stacie, Derwin, Ryan Wheaten, and Lakisha Henderson each bringing a unique joy to his life. John is survived by his beloved siblings, Myron Diggs, Lionel Diggs, Donald Diggs all of Gibson, LA, General Diggs of Thibodaux, Joseph Brewton (Alisa) of Houma, Gary Diggs of Atlanta, GA, Florence Diggs of Gibson, Diana Diggs Maze, Sandra Diggs Williams (Curtis) of Gibson, Lois Diggs Russell-Theriot of Gibson, Joann Washington (Ashley) of Lake Jackson of TX, Lisa Cambor Oliver (Mark) of El Paso, TX; along with a host of family, friends, and cherished loved ones who will miss him dearly; loving niece, Kiley Sims and nephew, Jason Russell. He was also survived by his Godbrothers and Godsisters.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Diggs, Sr., Elnora Nash Diggs; paternal grandparents, Peter and MaeEllen Jenkins Diggs, Walter Diggs, Sr.; maternal grandparents, Henry Nash and Agnes Sims Nash Johnson; brothers, Herbert Diggs, Jr. and Gerald Diggs; sister, Gill Ann Diggs; nephews, Darnell Wheaten and Jeremy Russell; niece, Shonner Griffin. He is also preceded in death by his godparents, Norris and Dolly Johnson Short; brothers-in-law, John Russell, John Theriot, Louis Henderson, and LeRoy Maze. Funeral services will be held at Beulah Baptist Church on September 20, 2025, with a public viewing from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Joyful Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 AM. John will be laid to rest with dignity in a burial ceremony following the service at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery. As we gather to honor John's life, we will celebrate the legacy of love, laughter, and dedication he leaves behind, remembering him for the joyful spirit that touched so many lives.
