Lt. Col. John Paul DiGiorgio, peacefully passed away on May 18, 2025 surrounded by his family. He was born in Birmingham, AL to Vincent and Nell Marino DiGiorgio on June 22, 1946. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Montevallo and started working as a social worker. After a short time in the social working field, he received his draft notice to serve in the Vietnam War, where he was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. After Vietnam, he completed nursing school and started working as an RN at University of Alabama at Birmingham. While working at UAB, he met the love of his life, Sharon. They had two children, Greta and Walter. John continued his service in the Army Reserves until he was called into active duty during Desert Storm. He retired from the military service in the early 2000's as a lieutenant colonel. He was known for his kind spirit and sense of humor - which he kept until the very end of his life. He believed in acts of service and would help anyone in need. He loved going to the DiGiorgio family reunion with his son, Walter, and visiting his daughter, Greta, in Boston, MA. He enjoyed taking rides in his truck, watching old movies and eating good food. Above all, he was a family man, devoting all of his energy to the people he loved most. John was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Nell Marino DiGiorgio; and his brother, Jack DiGiorgio (Mary). He is survived by his wife, Sharon DiGiorgio; his children, Walter DiGiorgio and Greta DiGiorgio Zaleski (Mark); two grandchildren, Vera and Theodore; sister, Rosemary Digesu; and brother, Bernard DiGiorgio (Priscilla); as well as many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Services will be held at St. Henry's Church in Warrior, Alabama on Thursday, May 22. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. followed by a Mass at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at St. Henry's Cemetery directly following the funeral. The family wishes to express a special thank you to The Floyd E. "Tut" Fann State Veterans Home and Hospice of North Alabama for their support and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Floyd E. "Tut" Fann State Veterans Home or The Parkinson's Foundation.
