John H.E. Downs Jr.

Church Point, LA – A Memorial Service will be held at a time to be determined by his family for John H.E. Downs, Jr., age 86, who passed away Wednesday morning, January 7, 2026, at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Mr. Downs was a long-time resident of St. Landry Parish near Sunset, Louisiana. He dedicated many years of his life to the retail grocery industry, serving as a store manager. Known for his strong work ethic, generosity, and kind heart, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. John was an extremely proud dad and an even prouder Papa, finding his greatest joy in his family. He loved nothing more than being surrounded by those he loved-sharing a good meal, laughter, and a friendly game of bourré. One of his most cherished traditions was slipping each great-grandchild a dollar for their piggy bank-a small gesture that meant the world and will forever be remembered.

He is survived by his daughter, Ann Katherine Yates and husband David of Sunset; his sons, John H.E. Downs, III and wife Christine of Sunset, and Kevin E. Downs and wife Christine of Scott, Louisiana; his grandchildren, Ashley Prejean and husband Mike, Steve Tabb and wife Anel, Stephanie Tabb, Kevin Downs, Jr., Chris Downs and wife Tiffany, Zack Downs, Asha Shae Downs, and Taysha Azelma Downs; fourteen great-grandchildren; and his extended family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Norma "Tut" Leger Downs; his parents, John H.E. Downs, Sr. and Nanette McFaddin Downs; his brother, William Downs; his sister, Nanette Downs; and his granddaughter, Amanda Boudreaux.

Truly loved and deeply cherished, John's legacy of love, generosity, family devotion, and treasured traditions will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
