John Zara Draftz was born on July 19, 1943 in Wayne, Michigan to John W.A. and Laura Draftz. He received his undergraduate from Eastern Michigan University and his master's degree from Arizona State University. He served in the U.S. Army in both active and reserve capacities and retired as a Colonel.
While stationed at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma he met Wanda, his wife of 57 years. They were married at the Old Post Chapel in 1968 and in the years following welcomed their son, John and their daughter, Kristi.
In 1970 he was offered a teaching position which brought them to Phoenix, Arizona. His love of education continued over the years. He taught at colleges and universities such as ITT, DeVry and The Art Institute. He also had opportunities which allowed him to travel and teach in other countries.
Although John had many hobbies and interests his favorite two were target shooting and trains/railroads. His love of shooting grew while he was in ROTC and in 1967 he was awarded the Post Rifle Championship at Fort Sill. John's love of trains began at a very young age and only increased over time. Grand Canyon Model Railroaders and Maricopa Live Steamers were two of the clubs that John was active in here in the Phoenix area.
Starting in 1970 John became a member of Lutheran Church of the Master. Over the years he was very active and held several offices within the church. He remained a devoted member to the church and its congregation.
John passed away October 27, 2025 at the age of 82. He had a great love for his Lord, his family and his friends. He was a blessing to many and he will be deeply missed.
John is survived by his wife, Wanda, his son, John, his daughter, Kristi, his granddaughter, Lindsey, his sister Nadine and his brother, Mel.
