John Dunleavy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fred H McGrath & Son, Inc. - Bronxville on Nov. 3, 2025.
John James Dunleavy, 76, of Eastchester, NY, passed away on November 3, 2025.

He was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 13, 1948 to Owen and Winifred Dunleavy. John and his two older brothers were raised in the Highbridge section of Bronx, NY. He graduated from Manhattan College High School in 1966 and Manhattan College in 1970 where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Following that he received a Master in Education degree from City College of New York, where he went on to teach mathematics at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx, for over 30 years. He was incredibly admired by his students and fellow teachers. John also worked as a vendor at Yankee Stadium for almost six decades. He was a well-loved fixture at his souvenir stand for countless fans and possibly the Yankees biggest fan. John's coworkers, students and family always admired his dedication and work ethic.

John married his beloved wife Mary Jo (Doody) on July 26, 1975. John and Mary Jo moved to Eastchester, NY in 1978, and raised their three boys in the Green Knolls neighborhood. He enjoyed traveling, never missing a Yankee game and spending all his free time with his family. John thrived in his role as "Papa" to his nine grandchildren, attending endless sporting events, dance recitals and Christmas pageants, watching the children read and altar serve at Mass, and picking them up from school. He was always there for Baptisms, First Holy Communions, Confirmations and so much more.

John and Mary Jo celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 26, 2025, and lovingly renewed their faithful vows in a hospital room at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

John was known to all for his kind, faithful & gentle manner, as well as his generosity. Though his virtues were many, he will be most remembered for his unwavering love and whole-hearted dedication to his wife and sons, who will always consider him the very finest model of a husband and father.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Winifred, his brother Patrick and his brother-in-law James P. Doody. He is survived by his wife Mary Jo, his sons John Patrick (Bridget), Brian Martin (Elizabeth) and Neil Christopher (Annemarie), his nine grandchildren Owen, Ryan, Claire, Christopher, Thomas, Nell, Evelyn, Eleanor and William, his brother Owen, his sisters-in-law Kathleen Doody and Linda Dillard and many nieces and nephews.

I am so saddened by the news of John's passing. He made our journey together through Sacred Heart School and Manhattan Prep a wonderful adventure. We would both go on to careers in education and though our paths seldom crossed, I always felt blessed to have such a kind, gentle and caring man as a friend. A highlight of my 60th birthday was traveling from New Hampshire to attend the last Red Sox game in Yankee Stadium. What a delight it was to introduce John to my two grandsons who he absolutely spoiled at his souvenir stand! May this dedicated family man and faithful friend rest in peace after a life well lived. Helen and I send our love to Mary Jo and all of the Dunleavy family.
