John Peter Durvett, 78, died peacefully on November 29, 2025 in Manhasset, New York, surrounded by his wife and daughters, the people who knew and loved him best.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Lisa, and their twin daughters, Lisa Marie and Anna Vala, who carry forward his humor, grit, and unmistakable Durvett spirit. He is also survived by his siblings, Paul and Denise. John reunites now with his parents, John and Ann, whose values shaped the foundation of his life.
Born in Auburn, New York, John built a life anchored in loyalty, community, and quiet strength. A natural athlete and a proud Purdue Boilermaker Rosebowl champion, he carried the discipline of sport and the heart of a teammate into every room he entered.
A career bartender, John didn’t simply serve drinks. He served conversation, counsel, laughter, and comfort. His barstool friendships and late-night stories created a second home for countless people over the years. He was also a coach, a mentor, and the steady presence others leaned on without ever needing to explain why.
John was recognized with a proclamation from the Mayor of Great Neck honoring him as a pillar of the community, a distinction he earned one small kindness at a time.
Stylish, funny, and effortlessly warm, John lived by faith, family, and friendship. He took care of people before they ever had to ask, offering strength without bravado, generosity without condition, and a love that never wavered.
A mass in his honor will be held at St Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Great Neck on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at 11am, followed by a private gathering for close, carrying forward the lessons, humor, and heart he leaves behind.
