Obituary of John Philip Eiden
John Philip Eiden October 25, 1979 – July 16, 2025
John Philip Eiden, 45, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away suddenly in his home of natural causes on July 16, 2025. Born and raised in Southwest Minneapolis to Ellen (O'Dea) Eiden and Philip Eiden, John was their beloved second child and the cherished younger brother of Anne Eiden. From the beginning, John's warmth, humor, and generous spirit set him apart–he was truly one of a kind, a man whose presence made the world a little lighter, kinder, and more joyful.
John attended Fulton Elementary, Anwatin Middle School and graduated from Southwest High School in 1998. He loved the outdoors, sports, fishing, soccer, baseball, hunting, and playing his bongos. He had an extraordinary ear for music and a playlist that spanned generations and genres–from classic rock to rap, his life was underscored by soundtracks that reflected the richness of his spirit.
His family and his friendships–tight-knit, loyal, and full of laughter–were central to his life. Lovingly called Uncle Dunks by his niece and nephew, who adored him, he never missed a holiday or birthday and knew exactly what gifts to give.
Whether cracking jokes, causing harmless mischief, or just being present with the people he loved, John made every interaction memorable. He could turn an ordinary moment into something unforgettable. His neighborhood, his city, and his people were his soul's compass.
At just 13 years old, John began a lifelong career of service with the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board–a journey that spanned decades. It was there he met his life partner and best friend, Katie Roby, with whom he shared 21 cherished years. Whether tending to ball fields or ice rinks, welcoming kids and neighbors with his signature smile, he was known for lending a helping hand without hesitation.
John will be deeply missed by his loving partner, Katie; his parents, Ellen and Philip; his sister, Anne; his niece and nephew, Naaila and Tariq, and countless family members, friends and coworkers whose lives he brightened.
