John Branton Eley, 73, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. John retired from the City of Norfolk in 2017, as a real estate appraiser. Born and raised in the Larchmont section of Norfolk, VA, he was the son of the late Norma Vellines Eley and William Brinkley Eley.

John was a graduate of Maury High School, class of 1970, and later graduated from Old Dominion University. One of his crowning achievements in life, that he often spoke about, was the 1974 Old Dominion University Intramural Flag Football Championship game, held at Foreman Field. It was against the intramural team, The Demons, versus the ODU fraternity, KA. His brother Bruce threw a touchdown pass to John, securing a 6-0 victory and championship title for The Demons. John will mostly be remembered as being a wonderful husband, an amazing dad, a loving Papa, a sports enthusiast (Go Yanks, Packers, and Monarchs!) and just an all around great guy, with so much hope, love, and optimism.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 48 years, Shelia Trout Eley; his two adoring daughters, Amy Carrington Eley and Cortney Branton Eley Clark; a cherished son-in-law, William Travis Clark; a granddaughter who lit up his life, "Beau-Beau" Carrington Clark; two brothers who will love and miss him dearly, William Brinkley Eley Jr. and Bruce Farrell Eley; a devoted sister-in-law, Wanda Trout Romm; and many extended relatives, close friends, and treasured acquaintances. The family and John are especially grateful to his caregivers; Aisha Carney, Davina Mapp, and Faith Banks. Your support and compassion will never be forgotten.

At John's request, a memorial service will be conducted on November 15, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., at Second Presbyterian Church of Norfolk, with Dr. Craig Wansink officiating. Casual attire and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Old Dominion Athletic Foundation/ODAF. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel is handling arrangements.

Betsy Grandy Elling

September 26, 2025

My name is Betsy Grandy Elling and I have known John all my life. My husband Randy knew him as a good friend as well. He was one of my brother Bobby Grandy´s best friends growing up. John´s parents were great friends of my parents. John and Sheila would join all of us Grandy kids at my grandparents home just a block down the street from where we grew up every Sunday evening for sandwiches and friendly games of Croquet. John has always been friendly, funny, a good friend and a man who would do anything for you. John you will be missed. We love you always and know you are in the loving arms of Jesus. Rest in peace
