John Ellis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home & Cemetery on Oct. 1, 2024.
ELLIS---John Michael Ellis, born June 7, 1942, in Halifax, Yorkshire, passed away peacefully on September 27th, 2024 surrounded by his family. He leaves behind a legacy of creativity, love, and inspiration. In his youth, Mike was a proud member of the Brotherhood of British Scouts, receiving the prestigious Queen Scout award from Queen Elizabeth herself. He also received a second award from the Queen for rescuing and saving a young boy from drowning.
His artistic talents bloomed early, leading him to a successful career in the textile industry. He was a master of kaleidoscopic design and was widely known for his keen knowledge of textile dye chemistry. Additionally, Mike enjoyed sharing his interesting experiences of working in both Saudi Arabia and Scotland. His expertise eventually led to his immigration to the United States, where he worked for several major carpet manufacturers and contributed to the industry for almost 30 years. Upon retirement he moved to Jacksonville, where he met his bride, Carol. They enjoyed 12 happy years together. Mike was a natural craftsman, skilled in carpentry and mechanical repairs. Later in life, he discovered a passion for pottery, merging his construction skills with beautiful glazes and colors.
His artistic journey reflected his vibrant personality, which touched the lives of all who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Ann Killian-Ellis, and four daughters: Eleanor (husband John Hawley) with grandchildren Devon (wife Dani) and Kaitlyn; Colette (husband Mike Ivanov) with grandchildren Max and Lizzie; Justine (husband Jim Shaheen) with grandchildren Laura, Jonathan, and Matthew; and Mykila (husband Joe Althouse) with grandchildren Drew, Emma, and Claire. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Shannon Huie (husband Jay), and their children Spencer and Grace, along with his brother Peter Ellis. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jackie Barker and parents, Muriel Rita and Wilfred Ellis. As his wife Carol often says, "Mike exhibited all of the fruits of the Spirit." He was a follower of Jesus Christ and was deeply loved by his church family, and everyone who knew him. A Celebration of Life service will be scheduled in the near future for family and friends.
All are encouraged to share photos, condolences, and other remembrances of Mike on the Tribute Wall here.
