John J. Ellison, 93, of Earlville, passed away peacefully at Hamilton Hospital on Monday December 1, 2025. He was born in Hamilton, NY on January 26, 1932, the son of John and Margaret (Whalen) Ellison. Growing up he lived in Hamilton, South Hamilton, Tampa, FL and then in Smyrna. He graduated from Sherburne Central School in 1950 and went to work at Bennett-Ireland a fireplace screen and implements manufacturer in Norwich. Shortly after that he received a call from Uncle Sam and joined the U.S. Army serving in Germany in the 7th Army, 18th Field Artillery Battalion attaining the rank of corporal.
After his discharge he returned to Bennett-Ireland where he would work for the next 40 years. It was here he met Elouise Hartshorn and they were married on June 28, 1958, in Earlville where they made their home and started a family with a son Douglas, and daughter Linda.
After the closure of Bennett-Ireland, he worked at Classic Pharmaceuticals in Sherburne for a few years before he retired. He spent most of his almost 30 years of retirement close to home taking walks, chopping down trees in the backyard, making big bonfires and enjoying time spent with family and his many neighbors.
Survivors include his children; Doug (Lisa) of Vermilion, OH, and Linda of Old Forge, NY, granddaughter; Eilean Ellison and her husband Charles Gaud of Saint-Mandé France, a sister; Margaret (James) Halbert and niece Valerie (Michael) Hicks of San Diego, CA, step-daughter; Nancy Whitby Eads, step-granddaughter; Christina Eads Taylor (Zach) and their son Will of Lebanon, VA and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family throughout the country.
He was predeceased by his wife Elouise.
There will be no calling hours.
A Celebration of Life and interment in Earlville Cemetery with Military Honors will be held at a later date.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation and thanks to the staff of the Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton for the outstanding care, concern and compassion they provided.
