JOHN INGRAM FISHBURNE, JR., MD
John Ingram Fishburne, Jr. died on August 7, 2025, at the age of 87. John and his loving wife of 64 years, Jean, have resided at The Landings for last twenty years, having first discovered it in 1975 when a private practice medical career in Savannah was briefly considered. John was originally a Charlestonian, while Jean was born and raised in Savannah.
In 1945 John's father became a US Foreign Service Officer and the family began a peripatetic existence which took John to a varied education abroad. When he finished his formal education, he had attended thirteen schools in three languages (English, French and Spanish). He was a graduate of Princeton University and the Medical College of South Carolina. With the MD degree in hand, he served a surgical internship at Duke University Hospital, then entered the Air Force as a captain and flight medical officer. After a two-year stint in the military he served residencies in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. His love of teaching then led to a career of thirty-three years in academic medicine with numerous accolades (too many to mention), at UNC (Chapel Hill), Wake Forest University, and as Chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at the University of Oklahoma, a position which he held for fourteen years.
He retired from the University of Arizona, Phoenix Campus, in 2005, where he held the position as Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Maricopa Medical Center. In retirement he has served as a Director of The Landings Association and as a Director of The Landings Company.
For recreation he played golf and tennis with friends. Jean, his wife and best friend of 64 years, and he took two or three international trips each year and have enjoyed several of these with the '59 Princeton Tigers. He is survived by his wife Jean Crawford Fishburne and their three children: John Ingram Fishburne, III, JD LLM; Barron Crawford Fishburne, MD with wife Leanne and children William (his wife Brooke) and Sarah (her husband Hunt); Virginia Fishburne Casey, MD with husband Kevin and children John Turner, Claire, and Andrew.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to his favorite charity would be appreciated. www.savannahvoicefestival.org/donate/
