John Flaherty Obituary

Strongsville, Ohio - Captain John P. Flaherty Jr., passed away May 31, 2025, in Strongsville, Ohio. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and decorated officer of the United States Coast Guard, he leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership and unwavering dedication to his country and family.

Born May 14, 1934, in Astoria, N.Y., John began his remarkable journey with the Coast Guard by enlisting as a seaman recruit. Recognizing his potential early on, he took the entrance exam for the United States Coast Guard Academy and was appointed just nine months after joining. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1957, and embarked on a distinguished career that spanned decades and oceans.

Throughout his service, Captain Flaherty commanded several Coast Guard cutters including the Juniper, Resolute, Boutwell and Polar Star. His leadership extended beyond the sea to critical shoreside assignments such as LORAN Station Talamupulan in the Philippines, and the Coast Guard Icebreaker Support Facility. He also held various staff positions at Coast Guard Headquarters and the Pentagon. His final duty station brought him full circle - returning to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy as assistant superintendent and retired in 1987. His exemplary service was recognized with numerous awards: three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, a Coast Guard Letter of Commendation, a Coast Guard Unit Commendation Ribbon, the National Defense Medal, Arctic and Antarctic Service Medals, the Restricted Duty Ribbon, and the Sea Service Ribbon.

John's commitment to education paralleled his military career. He earned a master's degree in international affairs from George Washington University in 1970, while simultaneously attending the U.S. Naval War College. Later in life, he pursued further academic achievement by earning an M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut in 1989. Utilizing his M.B.A., his civilian career included being the administrator at Mitchell College for several years and treasurer of the Town of Waterford in Connecticut.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Ruth Ann Flaherty; their children, John (Brenda), Rich, Connie, and Jean (Dan); grandchildren: Jessica (Kenny), JP, Josh, James (Sharon), Nina (Chris), Bekah (Chael), Amber (Ryan), Tanya (Evan), Zack (Danielle) and Nick (Brigid); as well as nineteen great-grandchildren, with two more expected soon. He is also survived by two brothers, Joesph (Amelia) and Edward (Donna). He was preceded in death by his parents, John P. Flaherty Sr. and Marie Flaherty; and sisters, Corrine Guilfoyle and Marie Flaherty.

Captain Flaherty's life was one of purpose - marked by courage at sea and compassion at home. His memory will live on through those who knew him best and loved him most. May his memory bring comfort to all who were touched by his life of honor and service.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Chapel, followed by inurnment at the USGA Columbarium and a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the National Federation of the Blind.

Jack Flaherty was a very fine man. He served the USCG with distinction. In his civilian life he served Waterford with honor. On his own expense, he and his wife visited the Mayor of Waterford, Ireland. They were greeted royally by a lavish ceremonial event of pomp and circumstance. Bountiful libations and exquistite hors d'ourves. Jack then drew out a letter from his folder and read the greetings of the Waterford, CT Mayor to the Irish Mayor. The transformation of an American casual tourist to an authorized diplomat was impeccable. Such was the character of a patriotic American, who was passionately dedicated to duty. May his memory be eternal.
