To Lucille, Danielle, Melissa, and Jessica, the Columbia class of 1978 sends heartbroken condolences to all of you for our classmate and dear friend. John was a devoted member of the class and of the University (as of course, were you, his daughters). A regular at every reunion and active from the day he entered the school in 1974, few of us cared more or gave more to the institution. One of the joys of our every five-year reunions was the chance to hang out with John for a few days. I think I speak for all 700 of us: losing John has changed us. He was solid, strong, and seemed untouchable.
I cannot imagine the pain and loss you are going through. I miss him already, and I will see his smiling face and hear his wise, funny, and ironic points of view every time I think of Columbia.
For the class, we are planting a stand of trees in his name through this website-I cannot think of a better memorial. John was a tall tree with wide-spread branches. Our class has been diminished by his loss.

Matthew Nemerson, friend, 1978 classmate, and class scribe.
