John Rubén Flores, 67, of Newington, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Lucille (Medile) Flores for 44 years. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, John was the son of the late Hector "Hugo" Flores and Esther (Ramos) Flores; son-in-law of the late Nicholas and Rose Medile; loving father of Danielle Flores de Benzerga (Yacine), Melissa Caban (Cleo), and Jessica Lynch (Jim); and devoted Abuelo to grandchildren Alex, Isabella, and Cameron Caban, and James, Emma, and Hailey Lynch. John is also survived by his brothers Richard Flores and Raymond Flores (Jo); sister-in-law Theresa Day; brother-in-law Nicholas Medile (Sherri); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
After graduating from Columbia College (1978) and Columbia Law School (1981), John moved to Connecticut with Lucille, where they raised their family and spent the next 43 years together. He remained an active alumnus of Columbia. His appreciation for education inspired his three daughters to graduate from Columbia as well. The integrity John demonstrated as an insurance and employment law attorney reflected his principles. His legal career culminated with four years of service to the State of Connecticut as General Counsel in the Office of the Treasurer.
John was a long-time member of the Church of the Holy Spirit, where he started the CYO Girls Basketball program and coached his daughters. He was a Fourth-Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and belonged to the Lions Club. One of his greatest honors was being a member of Catholic Charities/Institute for Hispanic Family where he ultimately served on the Board of Trustees, including as Chairman for several years.
His pride in his Puerto Rican and Argentinian heritage remained steadfast throughout his life. John's incredible sense of humor always spread laughter to those around him, and he was happiest when with his family.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, June 28, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington. His funeral service will begin on Saturday, June 29, at 9:00 am at Newington Memorial, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 183 Church St., Newington. He will be laid to rest privately in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.

To Lucille, Danielle, Melissa, and Jessica, the Columbia class of 1978 sends heartbroken condolences to all of you for our classmate and dear friend. John was a devoted member of the class and of the University (as of course, were you, his daughters). A regular at every reunion and active from the day he entered the school in 1974, few of us cared more or gave more to the institution. One of the joys of our every five-year reunions was the chance to hang out with John for a few days. I think I speak for all 700 of us: losing John has changed us. He was solid, strong, and seemed untouchable.
I cannot imagine the pain and loss you are going through. I miss him already, and I will see his smiling face and hear his wise, funny, and ironic points of view every time I think of Columbia.
For the class, we are planting a stand of trees in his name through this website-I cannot think of a better memorial. John was a tall tree with wide-spread branches. Our class has been diminished by his loss.

Matthew Nemerson, friend, 1978 classmate, and class scribe.
