Hasmig Cannata Obituary
Hasmig Kevorkian Cannata, age 71, of New Britain, passed away peacefully on September 30, surrounded by family and friends after a courageous seven-year battle with ovarian cancer, which she beat twice during her remarkable journey. Through it all and until the very end, she faced each challenge with grace, humor, and unwavering hope, never letting cancer define her days.
Hasmig was born in New Britain on March 20, 1954, to the late Avedis and Alice (Kouyomjian) Kevorkian. She graduated in 1972 from Pulaski High School in New Britain, where she met her future husband, Joe. Soon after marrying, they started a family and raised four children - Alyssa, Michael, Matthew, and Katie - in a home filled with faith, hope, and love.
A faithful servant of the Armenian Church of the Holy Resurrection, Hasmig taught Sunday School for more than 25 years, served on the Women's Guild for decades, and was part of the Liturgical Reader Ministry for the past several years. She also coordinated countless church bake sales, taking pride in every act of service. Her deep faith and service to the church were the cornerstone of her identity and strength, which she lovingly instilled in her family through every aspect of their lives.
Hasmig exemplified selflessness in all she did, always putting her family first. Her boundless love and strength of character shone brightest in her devotion to her family's happiness. She cherished life's simple pleasures: attending church services, baking Armenian pastry (especially Choreg), shopping trips, days by the ocean, her pets, spending time with her grandchildren, and the simple joys of sunflowers, sunshine, and the cardinals in her backyard – but most of all, the time spent with her beloved family.
She taught us that love is stronger than any illness, faith deeper than any fear, and family – whether by blood or by choice – is life's greatest blessing.
Hasmig is survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Joe; her children: Alyssa and her husband Rob, Michael, Matthew and his wife Christine, and Katie and her husband James; her brother Richard and his wife Debby, her sister Marie, and her mother-in-law Grace; her beloved grandchildren Taylor and Ian; and many loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her father-in-law Joseph, brother-in-law Jim, and niece Kristin.
Hasmig's family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Oncology team at UConn Health Center and the Hepatology team at Hartford Healthcare, as well as the loving support from her friends, and her former co-workers from UConn Health Center and the Consolidated School District of New Britain. The family would also like to thank Fr. Haroutiun Sabounjian for his visits and spiritual guidance over the past several years, and Fr. Kapriel Mouradjian for his support during the early years of her fight against cancer.
Services will be held on Friday, October 3, at the Armenian Church of the Holy Resurrection, 1910 Stanley Street, New Britain. Visitation will be from 9:30 - 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in New Britain.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Armenian Church of the Holy Resurrection, located at 1910 Stanley Street and online at armenianchurchct.com
