John Gordon Freeman, 83, of Chanute, KS, passed away Monday, September 15, 2025 at CenterPoint Medical Center in Independence, MO.

John was born on March 21st, 1942 in Holdenville, OK to parents George Washington and Billye Ruth (Murray) Freeman.

He graduated from Chanute High School and then attended the Kansas City Art Institute. While attending college, he met Patricia Ann Snyder, the couple married and moved to New York City to continue his artistic studies.

During their time in New York City, they co-founded Kenn & John's Broome Street Bar in the Soho District of Manhattan. It continues to operate today as Kenn's Broome Street Bar & Grill in its original location.

John made art in many mediums, of unique and abstract styles throughout his life. Many of his works were displayed in galleries, as well mentioned in publication. He custom pinstriped hot rods and big rigs freehanded under the widely known brand "Artworks" titling himself "The second-best striper".

John was profoundly proud of his Muskogee Creek Native American Heritage, taking much opportunity to deepen his understanding and adopt the teachings of such ancient culture. He spearheaded a project called "Renewing the Fire" which brought 16 of the remaining living Civilized Tribe Elders together for the first time in American history, sharing their collective wisdom publicly.

John had many inventions that he created, patented and then sold, including an ultrasonic auto parts cleaning system, and gooseneck trailer pop up hitch system. He printed and published a magazine series for oil riggers, "Wellhead" alongside his father George. John never "worked" for anyone but himself, however he often shared fond memories of bagging and carrying groceries at the local grocery store as a teen.

John traveled throughout his life into widely remote and peaceful areas across the country. As well to some not so peaceful or remote (the Mexico jaunt). He held a lifetime Golden Pass to National Parks; it was well used.

John was an independent soul, an artist, traveler, inventor, and entrepreneur. A devoted son, father, grandfather, and friend.

John is survived by his daughter Jesse Caroline Freeman (Robert Gamber), grandson Alexander, brother Dan Freeman (Lucy), and sister Susan Mountain (Mike).
