Greensboro – John Douglas Galyon, Sr., 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2026, at Hospice Home at High Point.

Born in Cleveland, OH on April 10, 1943, to the late Bruce Hamilton Galyon and the late Margaret Carnes and was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Cordelia Galyon.

John lived a fulfilling life and was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary Elkin Galyon, whom he met in Columbia, South Carolina. John and Mary shared a long and devoted marriage, supporting each other throughout their lives. He had a passion for golf and enjoyed volunteering at the Wyndham Championship. He was an avid reader, with particular interests in astronomy, trees, and dogs. He will be remembered for the special bond he shared with his and Mary's poodle, Buddy.

John is survived by his children, Deborah Swider and John Galyon, Jr., granddaughter, Kelsie Swider; great-granddaughter, Violet Swider and his good friends, Rodney Hayes and Doug Hensley.

Per John's wishes, a private family service will be held at the Salisbury National Cemetery, honoring his service as a United States Army Veteran.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hickory Grove United Methodist Church – 5959 Hickory Grove Rd, Greensboro, NC 27409 and the Guilford County Animal Shelter

The family extends their deep gratitude to the caring staff at the Hospice Home.
