Joseph (Joe) Franklin Flythe, 79, passed away March 1, 2026, at the Hospice Home at High Point.
He was born June 24, 1946, in
High Point, NC, to Dr. and Mrs. William H. Flythe. He attended High Point public schools and graduated from The McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN. After attending UNC-Chapel Hill for two years, Joe transferred to Guilford College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
Joe spent his career working in the furniture supply industry. Known for his hard work and willingness to get sweaty, he often pulled late hours at the High Point fall and spring furniture markets. Joe married Betty Poovey on August 7, 1971. Together they had two daughters, Jenny and Katie. Joe and Betty lived in High Point until October 2024, when they moved to River Landing in Colfax, NC. In his retirement, Joe enjoyed playing golf, meeting his buddies for breakfast, listening to beach music, pulling (loudly) for the Tar Heels, and volunteering for various organizations, including Hospice of the Piedmont and the food pantry at First United Methodist Church. Joe was also an avid reader, known to make frequent visits to the High Point Public Library.
Joe is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty, and their two daughters, Jenny Flythe and husband Robert Stankavish of Chapel Hill, and Katie Huffman and husband Noah of Chapel Hill. His granddaughters, Emerson Flythe and Ada Huffman, both aged 13, will always cherish their memories of fishing, playing sports, and pool time with "Papa Joe." He is also survived by his sister, Pat Koonts of Asheville, nephew Chris Koonts and wife Karen Williams of Charlotte, niece Kathy Koonts and husband Andy Vizor of Horsham, England, as well as his beloved English Cocker Spaniel, Rhona.
The family is extremely grateful to the staff at the Hospice Home at High Point for their loving and exceptional care over Joe's five-week stay and to the many friends and family who gathered around him to celebrate his life with milkshakes, Frosties, trips down memory lane, and an occasional beer.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive,
High Point, NC 27262.
