Robert (Bob) Dallas Griffin, 76 of Kernersville, North Carolina went home peacefully to be with his Saviour, redeemer and Lord following several years of illness battling lung cancer.
He was born in High Point on June 14th, 1949 and graduated from High Point Central High School in 1968.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the First Baptist Church in High Point for many years. He also loved attending Green Street Baptist Church where his father was a member. He loved singing in the church choir and music that celebrated Jesus. He loved the Statler Brothers and especially their gospel music and beautifully executed harmony.
As a proud U.S. Marine, Bob served with the 1 st Marine Division in Da Nang, Viet Nam in 1970 and later with the 3 rd FSR in Okinawa, Japan. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in 1972, he made the decision to continue his service to his country, so he joined the U.S. Air Force where he studied aircraft electrical / electronic repair and served four years at Chanute Air Force Base with the 3345 th Maintenance and Supply Group located in Rantoul, Illinois. While there, he received the distinction as being selected as "Airman of the Month" for the 3345 th M&S Group, a highly competitive honor. After being discharged from the U.S. Airforce in 1976, he worked for Hewlett-Packard Company as a Medical Field Service Representative. Later he worked for Western Electric / AT&T in
Winston-Salem, NC and became a technical training instructor, manufacturing troubleshooting representative to the customer representative manager and a quality inspection (IA) auditor. He was later transferred to AT&T Federal Systems Advanced Technologies at the Guilford Center in Greensboro where he developed training courses and provided technical training support for the U.S. Navy sailors in the U.S. Navy fleet. He also provided technical training to engineering contractors with General Electric in Syracuse, New York and Hughes Aircraft Corporation in Fullerton, California. He retired from AT&T / Lucent Technologies in 1996.
He later worked as a Senior Technical Writer at B/E Aerospace Inc in
Winston-Salem, NC, writing manuals for the airline aviation industry and during the latest war in Afghanistan and Iraq, he worked as the lead writer for the IJ.S. Marine Corps Cougar program at Force Protection Industries in
Ladson, SC. After relocating back to North Carolina three years later, he continued to work as a contract writer at companies such as Banknote Corp of America and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
As a hobby, he was a licensed private pilot and loved aviation, aircraft and flying.
He was devoted to his dogs over the years, Daisy, Duke, Joshua-Paul, Chelsea, Ray and Pudding and was a member of the ASPCA. He loved animals and loved to spend time with them, taking them för walks and playing ball with them. They were more than dogs to him. They were his children.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, James Paul Griffin, Sr. and mother, Opal Davis Griffin, sister-in-law, Sharon Oakes Griffin and a nephew Shaun Ludwig. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cathy Hyatt Griffin of the home, a brother, James Paul Griffin, Jr (Ellen), of Melbourne, Florida, a sister, Rhonda Hunter (Darryl) of High Point, a daughter, Janice Barnes of Greensboro, a son Thomas C. Griffin (Miki) of Herndon, Virginia and five grandchildren, Ian Barnes, Ava Sharron (Indigo) Barnes, Eryn Barnes, Kendall Griffin and Shoei Griffin.
Bob was a generous supporter of the United Way, St Jude's Children Research Hospital and the Shriners Hospital for the care of children with cancer and other disabilities. Additionally, he was a dedicated member of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, supported them financially and in prayer for peace in Jerusalem.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery in
Greensboro, NC. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Monday, March 16, 2026 at Cumby Family Funeral Service in
High Point, NC.
