HOPEWELL JUNCTION – John Matthew Garbowski, 66, passed away unexpectedly at home on January 3, 2024. A resident of Hopewell Junction, he previously lived in Yonkers and Poughquag, New York.
Born in Yonkers on December 3, 1957, Johnny was the son of the late Alex and Marie (Popot) Garbowski. Johnny retired from the City of Yonkers Fire Department after 20 years of service, and had served as their Union President.
Johnny is survived by his loving wife Lynn (Martinez) Garbowski who he married in Yonkers on January 17, 1990. He is also survived by his daughters and their spouses, Staci and Wayne Petroskey and Alexis and A.J. Dederick; his grandchildren, Calibur, Normandy, and Shepard Dederick; his brothers and their wives, Jimmy and Patricia Garbowski, Michael Garbowski, Joseph and Stefani Garbowski, and Jerry and Judy Garbowski; his mother-in-law, Laura Linhart; his 10 nieces and nephews; his loyal dogs, Tyberius and Tallulah; and many friends.
An avid outdoorsman, Johnny also enjoyed cooking and enjoying a meal with the people he loved. He was affectionately called "Big John" or "Trophy Head", but it was more than his stature or head that filled a room, it was his ability to tell a story with his quick wit and infectious laugh and smile. He is already deeply missed and will be remembered as a loving husband, a devoted father, and an amazing poppy. Nothing brought him more joy than his family.
In addition to his parents, Johnny was also predeceased by his sisters, Geraldine Garbowski and Kathryn Garbowski and his father-in-law, Larry Linhart.
Visitation will be held at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction on Tuesday, January 9th from 2 – 6 pm with an on-site funeral service beginning at 5:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Johnny to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
