John Garvey Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 24, 2026.
John P. Garvey, 92, of New City, NY passed away peacefully at home on February 23, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Union City, NJ and raised in Hoboken, NJ where he met and married his beloved wife Mary. Together they moved to New City in 1964 where they raised their three sons, John, Stephen and Tim.

John volunteered for the draft in 1953, slated to serve in Korea, but rerouted to leadership training as a truce was signed while he was in basic training.

Following John's service, he built a successful 34-year career with General Foods, holding financial positions of increasing responsibility, supporting iconic brands including, Maxwell House Coffee, Jell-O, Post Cereals, Kool-Aid and Tang. John also worked in the Company's International Division where he had the opportunity to travel the world and bring home gifts and treats for his wife and kids.

John retired at 55 and spent more time on the golf course, however his game never improved. We are not convinced he really liked the sport, however, he was a determined traditionalist and would walk the course, refusing to ride in a cart until later in life.

Most importantly, John was a family man, dedicated to his wife and children. He enjoyed and was proud of doing projects around the house. As his sons got older, he enjoyed helping them and their families with their home projects too.

John was known lovingly as "Pops" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with them and watching them grow. When asked, "Did you ever think you would be a great grandfather?", he replied, "I always thought I would be a good one!"

John is survived by his three sons, John (Laura), Stephen (Vera), and Tim (Denise), his grandchildren, Shannon, Katelyn Conway (Bryan), Brianne (Michael Goff), Matthew and Michelle, and his great-grandchildren, Jack and Connor Conway. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary of 66 years, his parents, Hubert and Catherine, and his siblings, Audrey Newton (Al), Catherine and James.

A private service will be held for John at St. Anthony's Mausoleum on Friday February 28.
