Susan Brown Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home Inc - West Nyack on Feb. 17, 2026.
Susan Mary Brown was born May 24, 1937 to Elizabeth and John R Dunay.

She grew up in Queens, NY where she graduated from John Adams High School with honors.

She was working at Ciba-Geigy chemical company in Ardsley as secretary to the President where she met the love of her life at a company party. A fellow employee who enjoyed matchmaking sat her next to Richard M. Brown, a Graphic Artist from Yonkers, NY and they instantly fell in love. They married shortly thereafter on November 7, 1959. Together they raised two children Stephen and Elizabeth. She was a stay at home Mom, and had been both a Cub Scout Leader and a Brownie leader. She then proudly graduated from Rockland Community College with honors and became a registered nurse in 1978. She was an excellent nurse who helped many during her career.

She was also very dedicated to the Episcopal church nearby in our hometown and was a staunch Episcopalian the majority of her life. Mom and Dad were always very involved in church activities . Mom was a chalice bearer as well as a choir member, an acolyte, and later becoming the head of the ECW as well as the Altar guild. Mom and Dad also became very involved in Episcopal Marriage Encounter for many years where they traveled giving counseling by helping others in their marriages through communication and faith .

When Dad passed in 2004 she became interested in Mary Kay Cosmetics and became a consultant. One of her greatest joys was going with her fellow consultants to seminars in Dallas, Texas.

She spent the majority of time sharing her kindness and faith at her church by sponsoring many adults and children as they were baptized. She babysat for a friend and her husband from the church to busy herself . She cherished this time with them and they all became family to her.

She later met David P Anderson and enjoyed his companionship for ten years. They spent most of their time together enjoying retirement, spending a couple of months a year in winter together in Bradenton , Florida going to baseball games and musical performances as well as spending fun times with the seniors in Congers until he passed at the age of 95 in 2021.

She lived in her home in New City for a little over 60 years and then moved near her daughter and son in law in Englewood, Florida into an Assisted Living Facility. As was always her style she hugged, kissed and thanked all that worked there frequently and became a beloved part of that community where she received loving and compassionate care.

She is survived by her son Stephen Brown and his wife Angeline, her daughter Liz Ovchinnikoff and her husband Tony, her five grandchildren, Chris (Maggie), Mike (Kristen,) Sarah (Travis), Katie and Thomas and her Great Grandson Caden. Also surviving is her brother Stephen Dunay and his two children Jennifer and Stephanie, Godson, Mike James, and her cousin Marilyn Avveduto.

She was pre-deceased by her parents John and Elizabeth Dunay, and sister Beatrice James .

We would like to thank all her friends and family for their support especially her neighbors and friends for checking in on her and helping her when we were not able and to all who continued to love, pray, and offer their support as she was declining. It meant so much.

There will be a viewing at The Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home in West Nyack, NY on Friday, February 20, 2026 from 5:00-8:00 pm.

There will be a private burial at Fairview Cemetery in Red Bank NJ

I've lived next door to Sue (and Dick) for many, many years. She was a wonderful lady and was sorry to lose her as a neighbor when she moved to Florida. She came to many of our parties and even stopped over once in a while for a glass of wine. My condolences to her family and friends. May her memory be a blessing.
