Agnes Green Shaffery

Agnes M. Green Shaffery (Smith), age 96, went to her heavenly home on February 21, 2026. Agnes lived with her husband Raymond Shaffery in Shadow Lake Village in Red Bank, New Jersey. She married Ray in 1997, and they spent many happy years enjoying extended family and friends. Agnes loved the New York Mets, golf, mahjong, bocce, reading, traveling, the Shadow Lake Patio Princesses and being a member of the Lincroft Presbyterian and Matawan Presbyterian Churches.

Agnes graduated from Kearny High School. She married the late Walter J. Green in 1950, and they started their family in Kearny, New Jersey. Agnes was a full-time mother and homemaker and loved her children, her church, her family summer vacations, and gardening. After raising her family, she was employed by the Joseph Coccia Agency and Kearny Federal Savings until her retirement.

Her family was her joy, and she lived her life sharing the values of faith, family and love. After a long and happy life, she wanted to share this beautiful poem, After Glow by Helen Lowrie Marshall:

I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one.

I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when day is done.

I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways.

Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.

I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun

Of happy memories that I leave behind when day is done.

Agnes will be greatly missed by her family, friends and community. She is survived by her husband Raymond, her beloved children Richard R. Green (Marianne), Deborah Green, daughter-in-law Sharon Green, her grandson Cameron A. Green and cousin Diane Kennedy. Her son Kenneth passed away in 2019. She is also survived by Ray's five daughters Lynne Shaffery Lauzon (Kevin), Nancy Shaffery McDonough, Janice Pattwell (Sean), Diane Flanagan (Bill), Carolyn Hirsheimer (Matthew), fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be celebrated at John Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, New Jersey on Monday, March 16, 2026, at 11:30 am. Visitation hours are from 10:30 am until 11:30 am. Interment will be private.
