John Gavitt Obituary

STUART, Fla. - John 'Jack' Gavitt, 82, of Stuart, Florida and formerly of Pawcatuck, CT, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

Jack was born in Westerly to the late John and Veronica Gavitt.

He had a 42-year career working as a plant supervisor for Cottrell Printing Press which later became Harris Graphics. In his earlier years, he was a volunteer for the Pawcatuck fire Department and a member of the Elmridge and Winnapaug Golf Clubs where he enjoyed golfing with his friends. He was a life member of the Westerly Yacht Club, Conquistador Men's Golf League and president of Conquistador Condo Assoc.

Jack had two great passions. He was an avid sports fan of all sports (but he truly loved his Boston Red Sox), and he was also very passionate about his 1940 Ford Street Rod, attending frequent car shows in the south Florida area.

Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 42 years, Carolyn; his parents, John and Ronnie; and two brothers, Larry and Mark. He is survived by his son Scott Gavitt and his wife Michele; his daughter Jamie Henkin and her husband Steve; two grandsons, Nicholas and Zachary Henkin; and his companion Mary Lou Bogner.

Visiting hours are omitted. Family and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Funeral Service at 11a.m. on Wednesday at River Bend Cemetery, 117 Beach Street, Westerly. There is no procession to the cemetery. Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly is in charge of the arrangements. For online condolences please visit www.gaffneydolanfuneralhome.com.

Jack was a one of a kind iindividual - he always had a welcoming smile and a warm greeting. His love for Jamie and Scott was second to none. Jack loved the nearby RI beaches and his family along with the Patriots and Red Sox. All who knew him, lost a great friend; he will be remembered by all of us, as one of the better individuals the Lord has placed on this earth. You will be so sorely missed by all of us. Rest in peace forever my friend!!!

It was a pleasure to work with & for Jack for 20 years at the Cottrell Company, later Harris Graphics.
After the Service I was eligible for GI Bill training so I signed up for the Cottrell Machinist Apprentice program. After graduation I ran a 5" NC Boring mill in the main alley on second shift for Jack. He would stop at each machine to see how the job and we were doing. One night, he stopped, sat on the railing silently. I asked him what was wrong. He came right back and said "have you ever thought about being in Supervision?"
I said "heck no, why?" He came back and said "because I gave your name to Ed Mueller". (2nd shift Superintendent)
A short time later, I was promoted to 2nd Shift Supervisor in the Main Alley, taking Jack's place. Great memories. I'll miss our friendship.
