John GEANY Obituary

GEANY, John J. It is with profound sadness that we, his loving family, announce the passing of our father, John Joseph Geany. He entered into eternal rest peacefully, at home with his son, Jay, at his side. He had just turned 97, and was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife, Joan; and his most beloved granddaughter, Joanie.

Born and raised in Bronx, New York, he was the middle-child of John Thomas Geany and Helen Dolan Geany. Forever hard-working and a diligent student landed him an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point), where he graduated in 1951, after which he served as an officer in the Navy during the Korean War.

It was while home on leave that he met the love of his life, Joan O'Brian. They were married in 1953 and shared 61 wonderful years together and were blessed with five children: Chrisann (Writer D'Elia), Brian (Carlotta), Loree, Lynn (Paul Heffernan), and John "Jay" Joseph Jr. John and Joan, a.k.a. Poppy and Memo to their grandchildren, had ten grandchildren, Courtney (Marc), Christopher, John (Kendra), Christopher (Stevie), Hillary (Raymond), Holly (Tom), Hope, Heather, Joanie and Joseph (Annie); and two great-grandchildren, Cooper John and Christine Joan.

John and Joan were truly blessed, with an action-packed house, he set out on what would be a multi-faceted career: first as an engineer using the skills he acquired at Kings Point, then, after attending and graduating from law school (in 1959), he set out to make his mark while honing his skills as a private investor.

As newlyweds, he and Joan first lived in the New York area, then they moved to Massachusetts, where they raised their family and eventually to Florida, where they spent the last five decades (between Vero Beach and Osterville, MA).

When he wasn't wearing five hats attending to his varied business interests, John enjoyed the camaraderie from a legion of friends and family. He was a lights-out putter and therefore a great partner in scrambles. He and Joan loved to travel abroad with a very close-knit group of friends, and most of all, he was an exemplary example of someone who was grounded by his faith and the love of his family.

A Memorial Mass will be held this summer in Osterville, MA, where he and his family spent many happy summers. The interment will be private.
