John Gentry Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Froberg Funeral Home at Oak Park on Mar. 17, 2026.
John Franklin Gentry, born April 8, 1944, in Peoria, Illinois, left this world March 12, 2026, due to heart failure, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and love for family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Lora Ann Greer; his father, Samuel Franklin Gentry; and his sister, Louise.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Gentry, and his children: John Lee Gentry, Samuel Gentry, Edward Gentry, Diana Anderson, Lisa Bunker and her husband Brett, Scott Green and his wife Tiffany, Robert Green, Beth Cross, and Sharon Wagner; and his sister Mary Beth Danner and her husband Steve. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will cherish his memory and the many moments they share with him.

John proudly served his country in the United States Navy before continuing his career with the Texas Department of Corrections, from which he later retired. His life reflected dedication, discipline, and a strong sense of duty.

Outside of his work, John found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. He loved reading the Word of God, fishing, and most of all spending time with his family and friends. John never met a stranger; his kind and gentle nature naturally drew people into conversation, and he was loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

John's warmth, faith, and generous spirit will be deeply missed but forever remembered by those whose lives he touched. Family and friends will have a celebration of life at a future date.
