It is with deep reverence and fondness that we celebrate the life of John Stanley Gibbons, who passed away peacefully at the age of 73. Born on August 21, 1951, in Ajo, Arizona to William and Jackie Gibbons, John’s journey through life was marked by his unwavering spirit, generous heart, and indomitable work ethic.
As a child in Cottonwood, Arizona, John’s first lessons in hard work and family bonds came early. He often fondly recalled his role in helping "build the family home," though he modestly admitted that his contributions were more about running around and passing tools than the construction itself. However, it was this very foundation of love and dedication that shaped him throughout his life.
John’s adventures took him to Phoenix after high school, where he immersed himself in the interfaith community. His hands were always busy, from providing home repairs and offering meals to the homeless, to donning the red suit and white beard as Santa Claus in underserved communities. His passion for helping others was a constant thread in the tapestry of his life.
Known for his athleticism, John excelled in both football and wrestling, and his tenacity and strength would later serve him well in his career. He embarked on a path that would combine his physical prowess with his intellect by entering the demanding world of Special Systems Integration. John became a vital part of a team that created elaborate sound and light systems for venues across the country. His expertise led him to oversee a project that would become his crowning achievement—working alongside Charles Keating to design the complete soundscape for the prestigious Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. John’s work transformed spaces, making them come alive with light and sound.
John’s legacy will be carried on by his devoted wife Mary, his sons Theron L Gibbons (Cory) and John P Gibbons (Amanda), and his grandchildren Vincent, Vanessa, London, and Ashton. He is also survived by his brother Thomas E Gibbons (Ricky), his sister Patricia Bice (Chuck), his sister in law, Tamra (DeVault) Gibbons, and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both his parents and brother William J Gibbons. John will be missed by his many friends and family, and will always be characterized by love, service, and an unshakeable commitment to the well-being of others.
A celebration of John’s life will take place on Friday, March 7th at 11:00 AM at Westcott Funeral Home located at 1013 E Mingus Ave, Cottonwood, Arizona.
