WATERBURY- It is with profound sadness that the family of Robert M. Gibbons, best known as “Gibby” age 65, shares the news of his unexpected passing on Monday, December 29, 2025 at Saint Mary’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Gibby was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on July 26, 1960, the beloved son of the late James and Mary (McInerny) Gibbons. He spent most of his life in the Waterville section of Waterbury, where he graduated from local schools before embarking on a fulfilling career as a transit bus driver for Northeast Transportation. During his time there, he served not only as a bus driver but also as shop steward and a proud member of Teamsters Local 677, where he held the position of trustee on the executive board.
Gibby was known for his love of sports, passionately supporting his favorite teams: the New York Jets, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and Boston Bruins. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he enjoyed sharing those thrilling moments with friends and family, gathering to cheer for his teams. Deeply proud of his 100% Irish heritage and the essential importance of “family”, Gibby would often speak of his greatest accomplishment in life which was raising his two beloved children, Michael and Brittany, as a single parent. He loved his family more than anything.
Those who knew Gibby will remember him most for his devotion to his family and friends. He was a man of great love, wisdom and strength who left an indelible mark on all those blessed to know and love him. May he now enjoy the eternal rest he so richly deserves.
Left to cherish and honor his memory and legacy are his children; Brittany Gibbons and her significant other Billy and Michael Gibbons and his significant other Avis, his brothers; Kevin and James Gibbons, his granddaughter; Zoe Gibbons and his grand-dogs; Poppy and Luliy. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his brother; Brian Gibbons.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects and visit with Gibby’s family on Thursday, January 8, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main St, Waterbury, CT 06705.
