John G. Halas

Age 92, of Lansing, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026. John was born on April 26, 1933, in Harvey, Illinois to Anton and Ethel (Shilaker) Halas. He proudly served in the US Army as an electrical inspector from 1953-1955, then found his way to Michigan to attend and graduate from Michigan State University with an engineering degree. During his time in East Lansing, he met the love of his life, Marilyn Kroger, whom he married on September 17, 2960. John retired in 1993 from his position as the East Lansing Wastewater Treatment Superintendent after decades of overseeing its operations. After his retirement, his life's passion kept him busy, whether it was fishing, garage sale-ing, tinkering in his garage, or operating his booth at the Mega Mall, he was always up to something. He is predeceased by his parents, two brothers, three sisters, his wife of 46 years, Marilyn, and his best friend, Orie Bashore.

He is survived by his two daughters, Kathryn (Matthew) Wardell, and Karen (John Greenburg) Halas; grandchildren, Jonathan, Maranda and Dale Wardewell; former son-in-law Forrest Tyler, his beloved cat, Skylar, and all the birds, deer, groundhogs, raccoons and other critters that he kept happily fed with bags of bread from the bread store. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather, great friend and neighbor, especially to the Bashore's and Jim and Cay Warner; and an extremely giving and generous man by all who knew him.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Palmer Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Delta Chapel, 6301 West St. Joe Highway, Lansing with Pastor Andy Croel officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday beginning at 10:00 AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society or the Disabled Veterans National Foundation.
