John "Jack" W. Hammerstrom, 97, lifelong resident of Sioux City, Iowa, died on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at a local care facility in Sioux City, Iowa.

A Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church located at 1212 Morningside Ave., Sioux City, Iowa, 51106. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa.

Jack was born on Saturday, October 15, 1927, to Walter and Ruth (Corrigan) Hammerstrom in Sioux City. He graduated from Trinity High School in Sioux City in 1946. While still in high school he started working for the US Postal Service. He later joined the U. S. Army and was honorably discharged. Upon his return to Sioux City, Jack went back to working at the Post Office. He married Patricia Anne Sroufe on May 2, 1959, in Sibley, IA. Jack continued to work for the US Postal Service until he retired in 1989. 

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a 75-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Union. Jack's hobbies included fishing, wood working, carpentry work, traveling across the United States from Alaska, South Padre Island, Washington DC, and Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was part of the Krewe de Charlie Sioux, the Madri Gras parade in Sioux City.

Surviving are sons, Michael (Rose) Hammerstrom of Sioux City, IA and Thomas (Paula Mae) Hammerstrom and Paul Hammerstrom, daughter, Karen Lesline, 8 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren, sister, Peggy Lee, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Patricia Anne, son, James, son in-law John Lesline, sisters Dorothy Dunlap, Elaine Danner and JoAnne Murphy Purdy
