John A. Hammond

LTC John Albert Hammond (retired) of Sparrow Bush, NY died on July 20,
2022 at Age 90. He was born September 8, 1931 - the son of Maynard and Lillian
(Lybolt) Hammond - in Vineland, NJ. He attended Port Jervis High School and
graduated from Cornell University in 1954 with a degree in Wildlife Management.
He then entered the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, where he
continued to serve for over 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1975.
Overseas duty included Germany, Vietnam (twice), Korea, and Thailand. Among
his decorations are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and Commendation Medal.
He was a Senior Army Aviator, qualified in both fixed and rotary winged aircraft,
with specialties as an Overhaul Test Pilot and in Logistics Management.
John is survived by his daughter, Debra Raye Thompson, and his granddaughter,
Meagan Bridget Thompson, of New York City. He was predeceased by
his wife of 53 years, the former Johnnie Mae Rhodes of Fayetteville, North
Carolina. He was also predeceased by his sister, Alma Brereton, and by his four
brothers - Robert, Maynard Jr., Fred, and George.
Cremation was arranged by the Gray-Parker Funeral Home. There will be
no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Army
Emergency Relief program at the United States Military Academy, West Point,
New York.
