John Harper Hancock, devoted family man, distinguished engineer, and lifelong servant-leader, passed away surrounded by loved ones on December 30, 2025, in San Angelo, TX. Born in Fort Worth on December 22, 1930, John lived a life defined by integrity, service, faith, and an unwavering commitment to others.

John graduated from Paris High School in 1948 and went on to earn his Mechanical Engineering degree from Texas A&M University in 1952, where he participated in ROTC. Upon graduation, he proudly served two years in the United States Army, including overseas duty in Korea. He later became a registered Professional Engineer, a credential that reflected both his technical skill and his disciplined approach to problem solving.

John dedicated 33 years of his professional life to GTE, retiring in 1987 as the Business Relations Director for GTE Southwest. His career included engineering and management assignments with the Service Corporation and operating companies across Florida, the Northwest, and the Southwest. His expertise in utility relations and intercompany relations earned him deep respect throughout the industry.

A Lion for an extraordinary 71 years, John’s service to Lions International was one of the defining commitments of his life. He held numerous leadership roles, including District Governor (1995–1996) and Council Chairman (2019–2020). His contributions were recognized with induction into the Lions Hall of Fame and the prestigious Melvin Jones Progressive Award. He was also an active member of the Aggie Club and the West Texas A&M Club, serving as president in 1962.

John’s faith was central to his life. A devoted Christian, he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and committee chair at both First Baptist Church of San Angelo and First Baptist Church of Tampa. He was known for his quiet acts of compassion—regular hospital visits, helping those in need, and offering support without seeking recognition. His frugality, strategic thinking, and humble generosity shaped every community he touched.

A passionate traveler, John explored more than 60 international destinations. His adventures ranged from the Orient Express to Atlantic crossings aboard Queen Mary II and voyages on a motor sailor. He traveled across Europe, Asia, Australia, the Holy Land, and even Antarctica, embracing the world with curiosity and gratitude.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Alice (2021), as well as his mother, Mary Rebecca Crouch, and father, Harper Hancock.

He is survived by his son, John Allan; daughter in law, Janet Lynn Hancock; and two grandsons, Kyle Harper and John Nolan.

John’s life was a testament to faith, discipline, and kindness. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Harper Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church in San Angelo on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery.
