John Christopher Hanigan, 75, of Mint Hill, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
Born in Syracuse, New York, John was the son of Francis and Christine Velkers Hanigan. His early years took him from Syracuse to Cleveland, Ohio, and then back to the lakeside town of Skaneateles, NY, before his family settled in Charlotte during his high school years. He graduated from Garinger High School, where his lifelong love of music first found its voice behind the turntables.
John's passion for music led him into radio, where he became a beloved DJ during his high school days and later worked for EZ 104 (104.7) as an account executive. His warmth, wit, and presence left a lasting impression on all who he came into contact with.
A man of many talents, John was also a skilled craftsman. After remodeling his own home from top to bottom, he discovered a new calling in construction and went on to own and operate a successful general contracting business. His work was marked by care, precision, and a personal touch that reflected his character.
In 1974, through a mutual friend, John met the love of his life, Windi Renfro. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, partnership, and devotion. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, music, and deep family bonds.
John is survived by his cherished wife, Windi; his daughters, Brittany (Kevin) McDowell and Kasie Hanigan, both of Mint Hill; and his beloved granddaughter, Chloe McDowell. He also leaves behind his siblings: Lynn Hanigan, Carole Buff, Lori Hanigan, Jimmy Hanigan, Kathy Carmody, and Chuck Hanigan; his mother-in-law, Louise Renfro; and a wide circle of extended family and dear friends who will miss his humor, generosity, and steady presence.
A gathering to celebrate John's life will be held on Sunday, November 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Hill Bar and Grill in Mint Hill. Friends and family are invited to share memories, music, and fellowship in honor of a man who lived with heart and left a legacy of love.
John's story was one of rhythm and resilience, of building both homes and relationships, and of finding joy in the everyday. His memory will echo in the songs he loved, the spaces he shaped, and the lives he touched.
