John G. Harknett

JOHN G. HARKNETT age 83, beloved husband of Patricia A. Harknett (nee Taylor) for 59 years; loving father of John B. (Susan Dugger), Caryn, Kristen (Hugh Louch) and Jami (Ryan Drost); dear grandpa of Evan, Gretchen, Annalise, Adam and Camille; John, Sarah, Chloe and Malen; Henry and Callum; brother of Richard (Sandra), Merrily Brooks (John) and Sue Anne Gettings (Lou). John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on Monday, February 2, 2026. Born in Glen Cove, NY, John was an outstanding multi-sport athlete who went on to become an accomplished mountain climber and respected businessman. He married the love of his life, Patricia, in 1963, and was exceedingly grateful for and proud of his children and grandchildren. He always enjoyed giving advice, including the practical "Drive safely and be aware of your surroundings" and the colloquial "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!" As a climber, John loved to share this quote: "Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance toward the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point. Climb slowly, steadily, enjoying each passing moment, and the view from the summit will serve as a fitting climax for the journey." (Harold Melchert). In his honor, enjoy the journey!
