John Henry Hartogh, 90, died peacefully at his home due to heart failure, under Hospice care, Friday, March 6, 2026. Formerly of the New Haven, Iowa community, he had just moved to Anthon, Iowa. He was starting his fifth year of Dementia.

John was born in Riceville, Iowa to Peter and Anna (Koenigs) Hartogh. He attended schools in Riceville, Immaculate Conception, Charles City and graduated in 1954 from St. Mary's High School in New Haven. He was high school president of the Catholic Youth Organization. He served in the U.S. Army for two years as a motor pool mechanic. John returned to farm his parents' land for the next 56 years. He was proud of his Holstein dairy cows and calves.

In 1960, he married Mary Jo Burkhardt, also from the New Haven community, at St. Peter's Church in New Haven. They were together for 65 years. They were blessed with three children, Annjean, Eileen, and David.

A lifelong member of the Catholic Church, he was baptized and confirmed. He began as an altar boy at age five and continued as an adult server. He became a Eucharistic Minister, served as Chairman of his Parish committee, and worked on the Building and Grounds committee. He joined the Riceville/New Haven Knights of Columbus, became a 4th Degree Knight, and served as District Deputy for four years. As a member of Farm Bureau, he served a term as a director for his district. He was a Douglas Township clerk and represented his precinct on the Mitchell County Republican Central committee. At last, he was accepted into the American Legion Post No. 389 in Anthon, Iowa.

During his life, he enjoyed collecting old iron (Allis-Chalmers machinery), swimming in Lake Hendricks, riding his bicycle on the Wapsi-Great Western Line Trail, canoeing on the Cedar River, playing cards, dancing to Country/Western music, and driving his pickup around the section.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; daughter, Annjean (Alan) Petersen; daughter, Eileen (James) McGuire; son, David (Mary) Hartogh; sister, Margaret (Len) Olson; sister, Mary Zeimetz; sister-in-law, Marilyn Hartogh; 13 Grandchildren and, soon to be, 17 Great-grandchildren: nieces, nephews and cousins, as well.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Anna Hartogh; parents-in-law, Edward and Leone Burkhardt; brother, Joseph Hartogh; and brother-in-law, Virgil Zeimetz.
