John Hatcher Obituary

John Michael Hatcher, age 81, of Newburgh went to the big garden in the sky on January 27, 2026 at the Heart to Heart Hospice House.

He was born in Tallahassee Florida, May 5, 1944 to Madeline & Maxie Hatcher, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William and Harley; sister, Madeline; in-laws, Charles and Kathryn Memering; sister-in-law, Kathy Brown (Paul); and special aunt and uncle, Herman and Dorothy Brown.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary; daughter, Sally at home and son, Jonathan (Mary Kate) of Windermere FL; granddaughters, Reagan (Liam) and Quincy; brother, Maxie Jr. (Jan); sister in-law, Gloria Memering SP; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He graduated from Evansville College in 1966 and chose to volunteer for military service at the peak of the Vietnam War. John enlisted in the US Army Infantry and served as platoon leader, Rifle Company Commander and S-3 Operation Officer for the 2nd Battalion 21st Infantry (mech). He considered himself a warrior, patriot and above all an American.

John married Mary Memering March 15, 1969 and raised two very special children. Through the years together they volunteered at church socials, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Parish Council, Special Olympics, JDRF, ARC candy sales, Soup Kitchen, Mother Theresa Treasures and House of Bread & Peace.

He enjoyed gardening, cooking, woodworking, fishing, running, playing basketball, hunting, shooting and reloading, but most of all being with his family. He was a Life Member of the NRA.

John retired 3 times: GenCorp, Ilpea and EAB.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2026 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame Rd., Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Father Claude Burns officiating. Entombment will be at St. John the Baptist Mausoleum, Newburgh. Following the entombment, everyone is welcome to come for lunch and celebrate John's life at St. John's.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish, may make a memorial contribution to the House of Bread & Peace, 250 E. Chandler Avenue, Evansville, IN 47713, St. Vincent de Paul Society, General Fund, 809 N. Lafayette Avenue, Evansville, IN 47711 and/or Sisters of Providence Retirement Fund, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, 1 Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876.
