John Dale Henry of Smithfield, Virginia, known to family and friends as Papa, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, February 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and quiet devotion to his family. A devoted family man, John found his greatest joy in spending time with those he loved, especially his grandchildren. He could often be found at the baseball field, proudly cheering on his “Boys” and celebrating every play with boundless enthusiasm.

John’s presence was steady and warm. He made a profound and beautiful impact on his family’s life through everyday acts of care and encouragement. He was a patient listener, a reliable supporter, and someone who celebrated others’ successes as if they were his own. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and his pride in them was evident to everyone who watched him at the ballpark.

John was the son of the late, William Henry and Iva Irene Griffith Henry. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Godby Henry; daughters, Dalene Iva Henry Garrett (Steven) and Victoria Ann Marx (Kevin); son, Walter David Johnson (Lisa); grandchildren, Randall (Lindsey), Joshua, Victoria, Vanessa, Stacey (Ben) and Johnny; great grandchildren, Preston, Tanner and Harper Henry, Van, Zane, Holden, Tanner and Ryan. He was also preceded in death by a son, Gerald Dale Henry

A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date to honor his memory and the joy he brought to those around him. Family and friends will gather to share stories, remember his laughter, and celebrate the many ways he enriched their lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to Post 39 Baseball at Post 39 Baseball, P.O. Box 181, UPS Store, 800 E. Rochambeau, Williamsburg, VA 23188.

John’s legacy lives on in the countless moments he created with his family—cheering from the stands, offering quiet encouragement, and making ordinary days feel special. He will be deeply missed, and his memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate to know him.
