Robert Shelton Hayes

Robert Shelton Hayes (Bob) 75, of Smithfield, VA, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2026. He was the son of the late James Joseph and Elizabeth Eleanor Hayes. Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years, Diane Wilgus Hayes; brother, James Hayes (Susan); sisters-in-law, Janet Dixon (Ed) and Janice Henry (Herb); nieces, Karin and Erin; and nephews, Jason and Andy. He was preceded in death by niece Erica.

Throughout his life Bob was known for his integrity, work ethic, kindness to others, his humor, and his many talents and interests. Bob was respected and admired by his work colleagues and his many friends in the community. He was a gifted chef, gardener, and mason. He was passionate about fishing and especially playing golf with his close friends; and he greatly enjoyed travel abroad with Diane, including multiple trips to Italy and South Africa. He helped improve our environment through his work in animal conservation and touched the lives of many through his work in community service organizations.

Bob will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by family and his friends in the community.
