It is with deepest sadness we announce the death of John "Jay" Herbert. He passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully on August 5, 2023, just shy of his 76th birthday. Jay was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. He grew up in New Orleans graduating from Fortier High School, had a BS In Psychology from LSU, and an MBA from UTK. He served in the US Army and then had an extensive career in computer science; often working as a government contractor, but most recently at TVA and subsequently retired from the FBI.
His greatest love was his family who include his wife of 52 years, Eileen, his children Kristin, Emily, and John, as well as, his grandchildren Hadley and Hudson. Together he and his grandchildren were the founding members of the Herbert Lego Lair.
Jay was an amazing Dad, coaching soccer with his wife for his littles and fostering a life long love of the sport. Jay was very creative and often created costumes and props associated with his favorite holiday- Halloween. He was a fixer of all things- mechanical, electrical, and interpersonal. You could always call on him for advice on almost any subject and he was a fierce supporter of those he loved.
His second greatest loves were traveling and photography. In his life he traveled extensively including to Egypt, Ireland, Italy, and New Zealand and was always up for a travelogue.
He was the universal Father figure, and was held in great esteem by many. He was fiercely independent up to the end. One thing we loved most were his "bear hugs" and will miss him and them terribly.
Jay was preceded in death by his mother and father, John "Joe" and Anna Bella Herbert as well as his sister and brother in law, Dorothy and Charles Gulotta all from New Orleans. He is survived by his sister Joyce Matherne, her husband Sam and their children- including Debbie Balsam, Danny Matherne, Vanessa McNeely, Denise D'Antico, David Matherne, Vickie Thorp, Donald Matherne, and Veronica Matherne and their extended families.
A receiving of friends will take place at Click Funeral Home on Middlebrook Pike on Sunday, August 13 from 12-2. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the charity of your choice or to the Alzheimer's Association, which is dear to our hearts.
