John was born February 28, 1954, in Mason City, Iowa, the third of four children to Clarence "Casey" and Barbara (Heuermann) Heuberger. He grew up on the family farm, located two miles south of Sheffield where he helped his father and siblings farm and raise cattle and pigs. He graduated from Sheffield Chapin High School, class of 1972, and then attended North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City. After college, he returned to the family farm until the mid-1980s.
John was united in marriage to Sally Worley on August 20, 1977, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City. He worked as a Farm Bureau Insurance agent and for HSPS Legal Services. John was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Sheffield, specifically the coffee club, and also served as an adult Sunday School teacher for many years.
John's favorite hobbies (in between knotting rope for every.single.object) were always focused on being outside to enjoy nature, regardless the season. Hunting for deer was especially a favorite sport of his from childhood through to today. His father Casey started the yearly tradition with John of traveling to
Lansing, Iowa, for day-long adventures in the hills, searching for deer. In the warmer months, John stayed busy fishing the pond and traveling to Minnesota to catch whatever would bite. In between trips to the water, he worked to perfect his cast iron recipes and grilling while camping with close friends and family.
John is survived by his wife Sally Heuberger of Sheffield, with whom he proudly raised two children: daughter Katie & Robert Jensen and their son Landry Ketelsen of Sheffield; son Josh & Lauren Heuberger and their children Larson and Eloise, of Sheffield. His self-promoted nickname was G.O.M (Grumpy Old Man) or Grumpy Grandpa became his mantra whenever greeted by the grandkids.
John is also survived by his sister Jean Ann Hartman of Florida; brother Jim & Becky Heuberger of Mason City; aunt Irene Mosiman of Merservey; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William Heuberger.
Those who knew John never saw him without a cup of coffee (recently warmed in the microwave for 33 seconds), a dog or three by his side, and the uncanny ability to strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone.
