March 4, 2026. With God's good grace, John Robert Horan, passed with quiet dignity as his devoted wife of 44 years sat by his side.
Born in
Bayonne, NJ on January 21, 1928 to Irish Immigrants, Patrick and Elizabeth Feehily Horan, John was the youngest of their five children; Rita, Kay, Ginny and brother Joe. Their Irish home was very busy and filled with love and laughter that John would carry with him all of his days. He was a very happy man, always looking at the bright side of life. He especially enjoyed singing Irish songs, telling jokes, and making up funny stories - all for anyone who would listen.
John enlisted in the Navy in January 1946 with a desire to follow in his older brother's footsteps and become a pilot. He was accepted into the program and trained as a WWII Navy Fighter Pilot in Pensacola Florida. Part of his training included attending Holy Cross College in Massachusetts.
In the years following his honorable discharge from the Navy, John's life followed the path of moving to Long Island, marrying, starting a family, and graduating from Adelphi University in 1955 with a degree in Business Administration.
With his first wife, John became the proud father of five daughters: Susan Horan Menditto, Kathy Horan McNally, Patricia Horan, Barbara Horan Gallagher and Carolyn Horan.
After college, John started his career in the High Tech Industry working for Honeywell and several other High Tech companies over the next 30 plus years.
By the mid 70's, John's work transferred him to the state of Maryland, where he would meet Jan Jewby. Married to Jan in 1981, John became the step-father of Kevin and Lynn Jewby. He was an excellent step-dad and they loved him dearly.
In 1986 he decided he wanted a change. John wanted to do "hands-on" work and started his own business. "The Repair Guy." He did repair work for landlords on their rental properties while managing two rental properties of his own.
John was also very active, for many years, with the American Legion Post 156 and served in many positions, including Commander. John was always a very high energy person and enjoyed doing and learning new things. He was an avid snow skier in his younger years and loved anything to do with water and sun - especially swimming and boating. When proximity to water and transporting of the vessel made boating difficult, John transitioned to RV travel with destinations of water always on his mind. Many wonderful trips up and down the east coast were relaxing and memorable vacations. When traffic issues eventually made RV road travel difficult, an RV was purchased and stored at the Myrtle Beach South Carolina Travel Park. It was his favorite vacation place right on the ocean, his home away from home.
John always thought of others before himself. He was a loving, thoughtful and caring person to family, friends, and anyone who knew him. He touched the lives of so many and will be greatly missed.
