John Hoskins departed this life on Wednesday morning, March 4, 2026, at the age of 80. He passed peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.
John was born on October 17, 1945, in Hernando, Mississippi, to Lucinda Oliver and Charlie Banks. He was one of eight siblings: Dennis Ferrell, Bobbie Ann Ferrell, Ruby Stein Ferrell, Jackie Ferrell, Earline Oliver, Lucy B. Joyner, and Emma Jean Joyner (Earl Jean).
In 1973, John married the love of his life, Rose Mitchell, in Hernando, Mississippi. Together they shared a loving union of 52 years and were blessed with four children whom they loved unconditionally: Shantell Hoskins, Keva Hoskins, Latiefa Hoskins, and Sherman Hoskins, all of Youngstown, Ohio.
John and Rose relocated to Youngstown, Ohio, in 1975. He was a devoted Christian and faithful member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. John worked for Mashburn Tree Services Inc. as a tree cutter beginning in 1980 and remained there for four years. He also worked for many years at Youngstown Sheet and Tube in the steel mills before retiring after sustaining an injury.
Outside of his work, John enjoyed many hobbies and activities that brought him great joy. He loved hunting and fishing and in his younger years played baseball for the Cobras. He also enjoyed watching sports, playing cards, listening to music, and spending time in his backyard garage sharing laughter, stories, and conversations with family and friends.
John had an incredible ability to make those around him smile. His laughter, wisdom, and warm spirit made people feel safe, welcomed, and at home in his presence. The memories he created and the guidance he gave will forever be treasured by all who knew and loved him.
Remaining to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Rose Hoskins; his loving children, Shantell Hoskins, Keva Hoskins, Latiefa Hoskins, and Sherman Hoskins, all of Youngstown, Ohio; his grandchildren, Shawayla, Cherelle (Kevin), Darrian, and Shamar; eight great grandchildren; his two living siblings, Dennis Ferrell and Lucy B. Joyner; his special brother in law, Earl Jean Joyner; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Waiting across the gates of heaven to welcome him home are his mother, Lucinda Oliver; his father, Charlie Banks; his sisters, Bobbie Ann Ferrell, Jackie Ferrell, Earline Oliver, Emma Jean Joyner, and Ruby Stein Ferrell; and his nephews, Kurt, Junior, and Ray Ray.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 13, 2026, from 10:00 AM until the time of funeral service at 11:00 AM at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 110 Funston Street, Youngstown, Ohio 44510.
