John Hurd Obituary

John Merritt Hurd, Jr., 88
John Merritt Hurd, Jr. of Dover, peacefully passed away at the age 88 on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at Kent General Hospital.
Mr. Hurd was born September 24, 1935 in Denton, Maryland to the late John Merritt Hurd, Sr. and Ann Short Hurd. He grew up in South Dover and graduated from Caesar Rodney High School.
Once John graduated high school he served in the United States Navy for four years. He worked several security jobs before he discovered his passion for fire safety. This interest led him to careers protecting the public. He served 20 years as a Delaware State Fire Marshal and worked for Kent County Building Inspections. Mr. Hurd's commitment to serving the public led him to be a life member of Robbins Hose Company, Dover Delaware. He also enjoyed being a member of Union Lodge #7, VFW in Camden, and the Camden Wyoming Moose Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Mae Hutchins Hurd, and sister, Emily Brougher.
In his earlier years, John enjoyed camping with family and friends. He was known for his infectious smile and sweetness towards others. He loved to dance and would often use the entire dance floor with Wife Bonnie. His later years were a bit calmer and enjoyed the warm air, chirping of birds, and passing of boats while he dropped his crab pots at Port Delmarva, Delaware. He loved and cherished his five grandchildren.
He is survived by his sons, Michael Hurd and his wife Amy of Dover and Scott Hurd and his wife Kimberly of Felton; grandchildren, Tyler Merritt, Averie, Blake, Joshua and Emmitt Hurd.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt. 10). A viewing will be held from 6-8 Tuesday evening. Interment will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover Delaware.

John and Bonnie were two of the nicest people at Port Delmarva. Always kind and cheerful.

John Hurd was bigger than life. I loved him like a grandfather. I enjoyed many days deer hunting with him, or I should say getting him lost in the woods. He definitely was a character, and would make me laugh with all of the stories he shared. I am sure all of you have stories involving John, but most can't be told until the statute of limitations run out. He loved to joke with my wife, April, and always had to stop and talk with her if he got the chance. The one thing I will always remember was him always telling me, "I love you buddy, you're a good man." That meant the world to me. His family is in our thoughts and prayers, but he is finally with his Bonnie !
