John Hurt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by James A. Dyal Funeral Home on Jul. 9, 2024.
John Calvin Hurt, 78, of Summerville, South Carolina gained his eternal independence on July 4, 2024. He was fondly nick-named "Piney" by his friends.
John was born in Dayton, Ohio on October 7th, 1945. He was the eldest child of Anne L. Lowe Hurt and Calvin Hurt. After graduating from W.E Stebbins High School in 1963, he joined the US Navy and was an Aviation Structural and Hydraulics Mechanic stationed in San Diego, California.
Upon leaving the Navy, he began his life long career as a long-haul truck driver traveling every nook and cranny of the Continental United States. In fact, he knew our nation's roadways so well, he could give you detailed directions from one random city to another from memory, and especially how to avoid a toll road or a weigh station.
In August of 1972, he married the love of his life, Shirley Jean Hurt (nee Parks Davis). Together they raised three children: Jesse Ray Davis (Atina), Debora Kay Davis, Sandy Davis, and outlaw - daughter in law, Jessica Hines.
He is preceded in death by his father Calvin, his mother Anne, his sister Willa Jean, and his wife Shirley Jean.
In addition to his 3 children, he is survived by his 8 beloved grandchildren: Jesse Ray Davis Jr, Jonathan Haddix (Jilleen), Michael Keeney (Roxanne), Dawn Wright (Calvin), Brandy Blum, Sean Davis, Collin Davis, Jeslyn Davis and multiple great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his ill-mannered, and cherished dog, Sport.
"Piney" enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, riding his Harley Davidson, and ad-libbing ridiculous songs to embarrass his loved ones.
There is no doubt he is now enjoying a fine cigar, a moon pie, and a Diet Dr Pepper. However, and most importantly, he is finally reunited with his beloved Shirley Jean. A Visitation of family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2024 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, 303 South Main Street, Summerville, SC 29483. Burial will be Monday, July 15, 2024 at Dorchester Memory Gardens, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville, SC 29485.
